Shipping Yoga Mats: FOB vs CIF vs DDP, Sea vs Air, and FBA Delivery

Shipping yoga mats comes down to two decisions: the Incoterm, which sets who pays and carries risk at each stage, and the freight mode. FOB means you take over once goods are loaded at the export port, CIF means the seller pays main freight and basic insurance but risk still passes at loading, and DDP means the seller delivers to your door with import duties paid. Because rolled mats are bulky and light, sea freight is usually the most economical for bulk, while air and express are charged on volumetric weight.

What do FOB, CIF and DDP mean for yoga mat orders?

They are Incoterms 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce, and they define who arranges and pays for each leg of the trip and where risk passes from seller to buyer. They do not decide who owns the goods or when you pay; that is set in your contract.

TermSeller handlesRisk passesBuyer handlesGood fit when
FOB (Free On Board, named port)Export packing, inland transport, export clearance, loading on vesselWhen goods are on board at origin portOcean freight, insurance, import clearance, duties, deliveryYou have your own forwarder and want control of freight
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight, named port)As FOB plus ocean freight and minimum insurance to destination portWhen goods are on board at origin portDestination charges, import clearance, duties, deliveryYou want a simple port-to-port price but handle customs yourself
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid, named place)Everything to your named address, including import clearance and dutiesWhen goods are delivered at your address, ready to unloadUnloadingFirst orders, small brands, Amazon FBA or no import team

FOB and CIF are designed for sea and inland waterway transport. For goods handed over in containers at a terminal, the ICC suggests FCA and CIP may fit better, so ask your forwarder which term matches your setup. Our standard options are FOB, CIF and DDP; see MOQ and shipping.

Which is cheaper, FOB or DDP?

There is no fixed answer: FOB looks cheaper on the invoice, but you then pay freight, insurance, customs brokerage, duties and delivery separately. Compare landed cost per unit, not the unit price. Our article on yoga mat wholesale cost factors lists every line to include.

Bulk mat orders usually move by sea in palletized or floor-loaded cartons.

Sea LCL, sea FCL, air or express?

Choose by volume, deadline and budget. Sea freight is the default for bulk because mats are light for their size; air and express are mainly for samples, urgent top-ups and small launches.

ModeTypical useBilling basisNotes
Sea LCL (less than container load)First orders, a few cubic metersPer cubic meter or weight ton, plus fixed feesExtra handling at consolidation and deconsolidation; allow more time
Sea FCL (20 ft / 40 ft / 40 ft HQ)Larger orders, mixed SKUs from one supplierPer containerLower cost per unit once the container is mostly full
Air freightUrgent restocks, launch inventoryChargeable weight (actual or volumetric, divisor 6000)Needs a forwarder and customs broker at destination
Express courierSamples, small cartonsChargeable weight (divisor commonly 5000)Door to door, usually fastest and simplest

Transit time depends on route, season and port congestion, so plan your launch around a forwarder’s current schedule rather than a fixed rule. Production itself typically takes 20 to 40 days after sample approval, as described in how we work.

How is volumetric weight calculated for yoga mats?

Multiply carton length x width x height in centimeters and divide by the carrier divisor: 6000 is the common air freight standard, and express couriers commonly use 5000. You pay the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight.

Example: a carton measuring 65 x 35 x 50 cm holds several rolled mats and weighs 12 kg.

  • Volume: 65 x 35 x 50 = 113,750 cm³ (about 0.114 m³).
  • Air volumetric weight: 113,750 / 6000 = about 19.0 kg.
  • Express volumetric weight: 113,750 / 5000 = about 22.8 kg.

Worked example for one 65 x 35 x 50 cm carton weighing 12 kg; your cartons will differ.

The carton in this example is billed on volume, not weight, which is typical for foam and TPE mats. Denser natural rubber and PU mats are more likely to bill on actual weight.

How should rolled yoga mats be packed in cartons?

Size the carton around the roll: the carton height or length matches the mat width (for example 61 cm or 66 cm plus a little clearance), and the footprint fits a grid of rolls. Roll diameter grows with thickness and length, so thicker mats mean fewer per carton.

  • Ask for roll diameter of the packed mat (with sleeve or strap) and the proposed units per carton before you confirm the order.
  • Keep cartons within your carrier and warehouse weight limits, and within the size and weight rules if they go to Amazon.
  • Use five-layer export cartons for heavier rubber and PU mats; avoid empty space that lets rolls crush or unroll.
  • Mark cartons with SKU, quantity, gross and net weight, carton number and origin.
Light TPE mats usually ship on volume rather than weight.

What are the US customs basics for yoga mats?

Every commercial import needs an importer of record, a correct tariff classification, and the right entry documents. If you buy FOB or CIF, you or your customs broker handle this; under DDP the seller’s forwarder does it on your behalf.

  • Classification: yoga mats are commonly classified under HTS heading 9506.91 (articles and equipment for general physical exercise). Some mats and accessories may fall elsewhere depending on material and use. Confirm with a licensed customs broker using the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule.
  • Duties and tariffs: the general duty rate is only one part. Additional tariffs based on country of origin have changed repeatedly in recent years, so get a current landed-cost estimate before each order.
  • Ocean filings: sea shipments to the US require an Importer Security Filing (ISF) before loading; your forwarder normally handles it.
  • Customs bond: needed for formal entries; a continuous bond suits regular importers.
  • Low-value shipments: duty-free de minimis treatment has been suspended for most imports, so even small parcels may be dutiable. Check current guidance on CBP Trade.
  • Marking: each mat or its retail packaging should show country of origin.
Important: This is general information, not customs advice. Tariff rates and rules change; confirm classification and duties with a customs broker before you place the order.

How do you ship yoga mats to Amazon FBA?

The usual route is DDP sea or air to a US fulfillment center, with FBA box labels applied at the factory. Amazon receives inventory but does not act as importer of record, so someone else (you or the DDP forwarder) must clear customs.

  1. Create the shipment plan in Seller Central and get box ID labels.
  2. Send labels and carton specs to the factory; check them in the pre-shipment inspection.
  3. Book a forwarder that handles FBA delivery appointments, or use a 3PL to receive, check and forward cartons.
  4. Confirm current carton size, weight and pallet rules on the Fulfillment by Amazon resources before packing.

A 3PL step adds handling but lets you split inventory between FBA and your own store. If you are planning a first launch, see how to start a yoga mat brand and yoga mat MOQ explained.

Frequently asked questions

Should my first yoga mat order be FOB or DDP?

Many first-time importers choose DDP because one party handles freight, customs and delivery. Experienced importers with a forwarder often prefer FOB for control and transparency.

Is air freight worth it for yoga mats?

Usually only for urgent or small quantities, because mats are bulky and air is billed on volumetric weight. Sea freight is typically far more economical for bulk.

What HTS code is used for yoga mats?

Heading 9506.91 is commonly used for exercise equipment including mats. Classification depends on the product, so confirm it with a licensed customs broker.

What volumetric divisor do couriers use?

Air freight commonly uses 6000 and express couriers commonly use 5000, with dimensions in centimeters. Check your carrier contract.

Can you ship directly to Amazon warehouses?

Yes, we can arrange DDP delivery to FBA with your box labels applied, or ship to your 3PL. Confirm Amazon current carton rules first.
