Yoga Mat Sizes: Standard, Long and Extra-Wide Dimensions Explained
A standard yoga mat is roughly 173–183 cm long and 61 cm wide (about 68–72 × 24 inches). Long mats run to 185–200 cm for taller practitioners, wide mats measure 66–80 cm, and extra-large studio or home mats can be much bigger. The right size depends on height, practice style and how the mat will be carried and stored.
Standard yoga mat dimensions
There is no official standard, but the market has settled on a handful of common sizes:
| Size type | Centimeters | Inches (approx.) | Typical user |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 173 × 61 | 68 × 24 | Most adults, studio rental |
| Standard long | 183 × 61 | 72 × 24 | Most adults, premium retail |
| Long | 185–200 × 66 | 73–79 × 26 | Taller practitioners |
| Wide | 183 × 66–80 | 72 × 26–31 | Larger bodies, dynamic flows |
| Extra large | 200 × 120+ | 79 × 47+ | Home workouts, multi-use |
| Travel | 173–183 × 61, 1–2 mm | 68–72 × 24 | Folding or lightweight rolls |
Our extra-wide yoga mat and foldable travel mat can be produced in custom lengths and widths within mold and sheet limits.
How long should a yoga mat be?
A simple rule: the mat should be at least as long as the user is tall, so that the head and feet both stay on the mat in savasana and long poses. Practitioners taller than about 180 cm (5’11”) usually benefit from a 185–200 cm mat. For brands, offering a long variant of a best-seller is a low-risk way to serve taller customers without designing a new product.
How wide should a yoga mat be?
The classic 61 cm (24 in) width works for most people. Wider mats give room for wide-legged poses, side planks and dynamic transitions, and feel more comfortable for larger bodies. The trade-off is weight and bulk: a wider mat rolls into a thicker cylinder and takes more carton space.

How size affects weight, packaging and shipping
Size changes more than comfort. It drives material use, product weight, roll diameter and carton count, which all flow into unit cost. As a rough guide, moving from 61 cm to 80 cm wide adds about 30% more material at the same thickness. Rolled mats ship in cartons sized to the roll width and diameter, so wider or thicker mats mean fewer units per carton and higher freight cost per unit.
When you plan a range, check how each size packs. Our guide to shipping yoga mats explains carton volume and freight, and MOQ & shipping lists our typical carton logic.
Pilates and exercise mat sizes
Pilates mats are often similar in length but thicker, commonly 10–15 mm, and some are wider for rolling exercises. Reformer mats are different again: they are cut to fit the carriage of a specific machine. See pilates mat vs yoga mat and our pilates reformer mat.
Which sizes should a new brand offer?
- Launch: one standard size (183 × 61 cm is a safe premium default).
- Second step: add a long or wide version of the best-seller once sales data shows demand.
- Studio buyers: standardize on one size so mats stack and store uniformly.
Each size is its own SKU, with its own minimum quantity, packaging and barcode. Our guide to yoga mat MOQs explains how to keep a range lean. To discuss custom dimensions, send us a brief.
Which mat length fits which user height?
A simple rule works for most buyers: the mat should be at least as long as the user is tall, and people over about 180 cm are better served by a long mat. Use the table below to plan which lengths your range needs.
| User height | Suggested mat length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 170 cm (5’7″) | 173 cm (68 in) | Standard length is enough; lighter to carry |
| About 170–180 cm (5’7″–5’11”) | 183 cm (72 in) | Head and feet stay on the mat in lying poses |
| Over about 180 cm (5’11”) | 185–200 cm (73–79 in) | Long mats; often paired with extra width |
| Larger bodies or wide stances | Standard or long length, 66–80 cm wide | See our extra-wide yoga mat |
For travel ranges, length usually stays standard while thickness drops, which is how foldable mats save space; see the travel yoga mat guide and our foldable travel mat.
How do you check mat size on a sample or bulk order?
Unroll the mat, let it relax flat, then measure length and width at several points and compare the diagonals. Mats come out of a roll slightly curled and can settle by a few millimeters, so a mat measured straight from the carton can read short or uneven.
- Let it relax. Lay the mat flat, top side up, for several hours or overnight before measuring. Rolling it the other way for a few minutes helps flatten curled ends.
- Measure length at three points: both long edges and the center line. The spread shows whether the mat is cut straight.
- Measure width at both ends and the middle. A mat that is narrower in the middle may have been stretched during cutting.
- Compare diagonals. If the two corner-to-corner measurements differ noticeably, the mat is not square, which shows when mats are stacked in a studio.
- Record thickness at the corners and center with calipers, without compressing the surface.
Agree a tolerance for each dimension on the approved sample and write it into the purchase order, for example a small allowance on length and width and a tighter one on thickness. The same checks appear in our inspection checklist and sample evaluation guide.
Common sizing mistakes brands make
Most sizing problems are listing and planning errors rather than manufacturing faults. These are the ones that cause returns and extra cost most often:
- Mixing units. Listing 183 cm on the box and 70 inches on the product page creates doubt. Convert carefully (183 cm is about 72 in) and use the same rounding everywhere.
- Not stating width. Buyers comparing a wide mat with a standard one need the width in the title or first bullet, not only in the specification table.
- Accessories that do not fit. A mat bag sized for a 4 mm standard mat will not take a 6 mm wide mat. Size the mat bag or carry strap to the largest roll in the range.
- Too many sizes at launch. Each extra size multiplies SKUs, minimums and packaging artwork; start with one and add on demand.
- Ignoring courier size limits. Long, wide and thick mats can push parcels into oversize tiers; check the packed dimensions before promising free shipping.
What size details belong in the purchase order?
Write every dimension in both centimeters and inches, with a tolerance, and add the rolled or folded size so packaging and cartons can be planned at the same time. A complete size line looks like this:

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard size of a yoga mat?
About 173–183 cm long and 61 cm wide (68–72 × 24 inches). The 183 × 61 cm size is common for premium mats.
What size yoga mat do I need if I am tall?
Choose a mat at least as long as your height. People over about 180 cm usually prefer 185–200 cm long mats.
Are wide yoga mats worth it?
Wide mats (66–80 cm) give more room for dynamic poses and larger bodies, but they are heavier and bulkier to carry.
Can yoga mats be made in custom sizes?
Yes, within the limits of the material sheet or mold. Custom sizes usually carry their own MOQ.
